1. How did you discover your talent for creating such creepy, and wonderful creatures?

Trial and Error, honestly. I've always loved making dolls, but it took a lot of frittering about and playing with stuff to come up with the techniques and designs I'm using now. (and about 10 years. :P) D: I think a little bit of everything I learn ends up in my dolls at one point or another. ^_^

Creepy wise, ummmmm... I like to put a little bit of asymmetry in everything I do? and I like worn and used things, so I try and make my stuff look lived in and alive. ^_^ (also, I like teeth. yus. :P)

2. What drew you into the world of anime and Japan in general?

I love learning Japanese! ^__^ I took a class back in '97(?) because it was available and the teacher was fun and kinda just took to it. ^_^ I've been taking classes and doing self study off and on since then. (so, like 12ish years? O_o;; dang time flies!) I've been thinking of taking the JLPT next year if I can brush up enough. We'll see.

I actually watch way more dramas and movies than I do anime. ^_^ It's a good way of picking up pronunciation and picking out dialects and stuff. (especially when I watch them with the subtitles turned off.) And there's some really fun stories. ^_^ (and mythology/historical/documentary stuff is always fascinating, too. ^_^)

3. You have so many amazing talents (cooking, baking, sewing, doll making, tarot reading, best friending), what is your favorite? What do YOU think you do best?

Ahahaha... ummmmm... I'M REALLY GOOD AT BEING ME. yus. :P and hostessing with the mostesting. ^__^ Although Thanksgiving is giving me anxiety this year, but that's pretty much just this year in general making me anxious. :P

4. Once and for all, which is your absolute FAVORITE Doctor?

AAAAAAAAAAAH!! Eight! no, Nine! no, Seven! But Six is my favorite Audio!Doctor, but i like Five in the audios toooo AAAAAH!!! WHY DO I HAVE TO PICK JUST ONE?? D: D: D: I like the Doctor. He's a hoopy frood who knows where his towel is(usually).

5. Describe your ideal vacation if you had no time or financial restrictions.

Ooh! Ummm, I would take 5 years off to go vagabonding around the world and thruhike the AT! Totally! And try and hit up a bunch of international art/craft workshops along the way. ^___^v There's an awesome sculpture workshop in Italy I've had my eye on for a while and making ball-jointed art dolls in Japan would rock! ^____^ oh! and then do Penland. :D I DON'T WANT MUCH REALLY.

Basilisk 6.01 Update

So about a year and a half ago, upstart_crow asked me to make a basilisk for her. And I said sure! I'll look into it! and then I'd start a piece and hate it, and talk to her a bit and write stuff down and start another piece and hate it and almost finished a piece and hated it and... you get the idea.

But Wednesday evening I decided that DAMMIT I WAS GONNA FINISH A BASILISK! D: D: D: So I sat down and called karadin for moral support and made an AWESOME armature that I am happy with! ^____^ YAY!!

She's got the Armature 2.0 design and is a little over 15" tall right now. Her tail is completely articulated as are her arm, leg ankle and wrist joints. ^_^

Whoot!!

Please excuse my messy table. D: D: I was more concerned with finishing the armature than cleaning. :P :P Man, I wish I'd notice these things when I take the pics. *sigh*

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Interfictions 2, the second anthology of new “interstitial” fiction from the Interstitial Arts Foundation, will be released by Small Beer Press on November 3rd, 2009. The anthology, edited by acclaimed authors Delia Sherman and Christopher Barzak, further explores the interstices of genre and form, drawing ever-changing maps of what literary art can be.

In honor of their first Interfictions anthology, the IAF held a jewelry auction in the summer of 2007: each piece was inspired by stories within that pioneering collection, which critics hailed as “odd, deep, delightful…”. Now, in 2009, the Interstitial Arts Foundation is crossing their own previously-erected borders and has opened the auction up to all manner of portable art.

A wide array of artists – dollmakers, painters, jewelry-crafters, knitters, and more – were invited to create pieces inspired by the border-crossing works in the first and second Interfictions anthologies. Child Empress WIP pics. ^___^

I realized this morning as I was sorting out my flickr account that I haven't posted WIP pics for the CE yet. D: soooooo... here they are. ~_^

I didn't take very many this time around being as I was more concerned with creating then documenting, but I think I got a couple good ones. ^___^

Armature! I did not make her articulated this time around, which was actually more difficult than I had expected. craziness.

The pink beads on her legs are for texture and were later on painted and sealed in several layers.

She has no hands! D: D: D:

I decided that her pattern would be multiples of 5, so if you look carefully, she has 20 beads on each leg, 10 limbs, five eyes, five fingers, five fuzzy gillthings, etc... I'm sure I missed a few near the end, but all things considered I stuck to my self imposed rules. ~_^

Just finished sealing her crownspikes and am letting her dry before finishing the decorating part.

The translucent clay looks white before it's cured, which can mess me up some times when I'm working with specific color schemes in mind. But hey! what am I without a little randomness and happy accidents to work with. This time around I was specifically going for the translucent look, so it all worked out! yay! ^_^

aaaaaand last but not least, a 3/4 shot of her head pre-detailing. ^_^

She was 4 months of work (amid other projects) and took about 115 hours.

(as I've recently been on an insomnia kick, my sleeplessness = more productivity?? and I've got 10 dolls waiting to be properly photographed before I can post them around. ^_^)

I was just bemoaning the fact that I was feeling feverish and exhausted and nauseated and hoping that I wasn't getting sick when I remembered that the last time i ate was... 12 hours ago? and am most definitely dehydrated due to the same. D: D: D: Some times I am not so smart. :PP

I am about to remedy that with some chicken fried rice. :P (and by "chicken fried rice" I'm referring to rice fried with bits of chicken, not batter fried an served with white pepper gravy. :P :P)

THE LITTLE WOODEN DOLL
"My little Vasilissa, my dear daughter, listen to what I say, remember well my last words and fail not to carry out my wishes. I am dying, and with my blessing, I leave to thee this little doll. It is very precious for there is no other like it in the whole world. Carry it always about with thee in thy pocket and never show it to anyone. When evil threatens thee or sorrow befalls thee, go into a corner, take it from thy pocket and give it something to eat and drink. It will eat and drink a little, and then thou mayest tell it thy trouble and ask its advice, and it will tell thee how to act in thy time of need." So saying, she kissed her little daughter on the forehead, blessed her, and shortly after died.

Little Vasilissa grieved greatly for her mother, and her sorrow was so deep that when the dark night came, she lay in her bed and wept and did not sleep. At length she be thought herself of the tiny doll, so she rose and took it from the pocket of her gown and finding a piece of wheat bread and a cup of kvass, she set them before it, and said: "There, my little doll, take it. Eat a little, and drink a little, and listen to my grief. My dear mother is dead and I am lonely for her."

Then the doll's eyes began to shine like fireflies, and suddenly it became alive. It ate a morsel of the bread and took a sip of the kvass, and when it had eaten and drunk, it said:

"Don't weep, little Vasilissa. Grief is worst at night. Lie down, shut thine eyes, comfort thyself and go to sleep. The morning is wiser than the evening." So Vasilissa the Beautiful lay down, comforted herself and went to sleep, and the next day her grieving was not so deep and her tears were less bitter.

Gently carved wood warm with a maternal love that reaches beyond death: rose-infused amber and soft golden sandalwood.

THE WHITE RIDER
The wood was very dark, and she could not help trembling from fear. Suddenly she heard the sound of a horse's hoofs and a man on horseback galloped past her. He was dressed all in white, the horse under him was milk-white and the harness was white, and just as he passed her it became twilight.

White leather and sandalwood.

THE RED RIDER
She went a little further and again she heard the sound of a horse's hoofs and there came another man on horseback galloping past her. He was dressed all in red, and the horse under him was blood-red and its harness was red, and just as he passed her the sun rose.

Red leather, red moss, and balsam.

THE BLACK RIDER
As she stood there a third man on horseback came galloping up. His face was black, he was dressed all in black, and the horse he rode was coal-black. He galloped up to the gate of the hut and disappeared there as if he had sunk through the ground and at that moment the night came and the forest grew dark.

But it was not dark on the green lawn, for instantly the eyes of all the skulls on the wall were lighted up and shone till the place was as bright as day. When she saw this Vasilissa trembled so with fear that she could not run away.

THE CHICKEN-LEGGED HUT
But at evening she came all at once to the green lawn where the wretched little hut stood on its hens' legs. The wall around the hut was made of human bones and on its top were skulls. There was a gate in the wall, whose hinges were the bones of human feet and whose locks were jaw-bones set with sharp teeth. The sight filled Vasilissa with horror and she stopped as still as a post buried in the ground.

Creaky wood and sun-dried thatching, clacking bones, leering skulls, burnt herbs, and enormous magical chicken feet.

BABA YAGA
Then suddenly the wood became full of a terrible noise; the trees began to groan, the branches to creak and the dry leaves to rustle, and the Baba Yaga came flying from the forest. She was riding in a great iron mortar and driving it with the pestle, and as she came she swept away her trail behind her with a kitchen broom.

Spell-soaked herbs and flowers, cold iron, broom twigs, bundles of moss and patchouli root, and moth dust.

THE WITCH'S REPAST
"Well," said the old witch, "I know them. But if I give thee the fire thou shalt stay with me some time and do some work to pay for it. If not, thou shalt be eaten for my supper." Then she turned to the gate and shouted: "Ho! Ye, my solid locks, unlock! Thou, my stout gate, open!" Instantly the locks unlocked, the gate opened of itself, and the Baba Yaga rode in whistling. Vasilissa entered behind her and immediately the gate shut again and the locks snapped tight.

When they had entered the hut the old witch threw her self down on the stove, stretched out her bony legs and said:

"Come, fetch and put on the table at once everything that is in the oven. I am hungry." So Vasilissa ran and lighted a splinter of wood from one of the skulls on the wall and took the food from the oven and set it before her. There was enough cooked meat for three strong men. She brought also from the cellar kvass, honey, and red wine, and the Baba Yaga ate and drank the whole, leaving the girl only a little cabbage soup, a crust of bread and a morsel of suckling pig.

FIRE FOR THY STEPMOTHER'S DAUGHTERS
Vasilissa ran to the yard, and behind her she heard the old witch shouting to the locks and the gate. The locks opened, the gate swung wide, and she ran out on to the lawn. The Baba Yaga seized from the wall one of the skulls with burning eyes and flung it after her. "There," she howled, "is the fire for thy stepmother's daughters. Take it. That is what they sent thee here for, and may they have joy of it!"

Flaming coals, hellfire, and blackened bone.

VASILISSA
"Take it, then," the Tsar said, "and bid her do it for me." The old woman brought the linen home and told Vasilissa the Tsar's command: "Well I knew that the work would needs be done by my own hands," said Vasilissa, and, locking herself in her own room, began to make the shirts. So fast and well did she work that soon a dozen were ready. Then the old woman carried them to the Tsar, while Vasilissa washed her face, dressed her hair, put on her best gown and sat down at the window to see what would happen. And presently a servant in the livery of the Palace came to the house and entering, said: "The Tsar, our lord, desires himself to see the clever needlewoman who has made his shirts and to reward her with his own hands."

Vasilissa rose and went at once to the Palace, and as soon as the Tsar saw her, he fell in love with her with all his soul. He took her by her white hand and made her sit beside him. "Beautiful maiden," he said, "never will I part from thee and thou shalt be my wife."

So the Tsar and Vasilissa the Beautiful were married, and her father returned from the far-distant Tsardom, and he and the old woman lived always with her in the splendid Palace, in all joy and contentment. And as for the little wooden doll, she carried it about with her in her pocket all her life long.

She herself had cheeks like blood and milk and grew every day more and more beautiful: creamy skin musk and blushing pink musk with soft sandalwood, white amber, dutiful myrrh, and star jasmine.

I've got a cinnamon apple/nectarine/pear/blueberry fruit crisp with oats/real butter/brownsugar/mexican vanilla topping in the oven and chicken curry with rootveggies and awesome on the stove waiting for people to show up. ^____^ and rice in the ricecooker and thick homestyle vanilla icecream in the freeeezer. yus!!

oh man, that fruit crisp topping ~~should caramelize~~ is carmelizing! yey! and I am a very happy jane. ^____^

Aahahaha!! Maylene has an admirer! :D :D Tailor lady is full of the good crack, man. ^_^

I love that the Manor was repaired while the tailoring was going on, and as Sebastian ordered the servants to only clean up and nothing else, I am now *really curious* as to just how he managed it. (even though it will never be explained, I WANT TO KNOOOOOOOW. ;_;) Just who was contracted for it? *sigh*

edit: lol! I just noticed that he's got toolboxes of some sort or another in every scene. HAHAHAHAHA!!

Also, Beaaaaaaaaaast!! ;______________; OMG SEBASTIAN I HAVE NO WORDS. D: D: D:

Also, I need more Finny. (I am just full of wants, apparently) *snugs him* I'd be surprised that the tailor lady didn't design his outfit as well. ~_^

2. I have discovered a new favorite faerietale! :D :D See? My beloved Bpal is good for much more than nosegasms! ^____^

I love Rasputina (and by default Melora Creager) and the Scarring Party and 16 Horsepower and Pale Young Gentlemen and Hem and Iron&Wine and stuff... I just need more to add to my Working playlist. ^_^ (and something to Google next time I take a break. ^_^)

I'm currently playing my iTunes on shuffle everything, but I believe I need to narrow things down before I kill something. rawr.

EDIT: OMG! hravan has totally saved my life. ^___^ (or the bunnies who are not yet dead, but are screaming in the other room before their inevitable defenestration... >_>;)

Feral Armatures In My Kitchen.

I am working on the Trickster Who Shall Not be Named, But Who's Name Starts With A "C" And Ends With An "Oyote" for a commission and up until last night or so He's been a right bastard. But now, apparently He wants to cooperate so who am I to complain? ^___^

Rawr! Two-legged *and* Four-legged! ^____^ and He stands by Himself! whoot!

This is my new prototype armature that is actually built to model a skeleton. hopefully, it'll fix the "spaghetti arms" problem I've been plagued with up until now.

He's kinda sexy. I totally have to finish repairing Pan now so I can photograph them together. *purrr purrrr purrr*

also, this guy needs a pointy knitted hat. I totally wish my knitting skills were up to it. :( He's so cute!

Last night I dreamed that I was interviewing for a job baking cakes for Dragons. It was actually really cool! and the benefits were really nice. and the kitchen was fabulous. *sigh*

the weirdest thing was that the manager/chef made all his lists by drawing each item in colored chalk on a board. I was like, damn that's fast! I'll never be able to make lists like that! D:

I was very happy that Dragons ate sweets and not cats. yus.

So, yesterday while digging through studio stuff I found my cd player and patti smith cd's! omg I forgot how much I love her. ^___^ yey!

And! My paint and flour covered cd books. (which are just as weird a mix as my itunes. :P) And Pinetop Seven! and Tantra Lounge! and Sigur Ros! and all those crazy local bands I like supporting! (~_^) yey! ^___^ *dances around*

Now if I can just find that Child Ballad mix I know I've got somewhere, I can happily finish my current worklist and get a start on Red Riding Hood's Grandma's Cottage. :D

And speaking of dolls, Note to coyote_eyes: I won't have He Who Shall Not be Named Due To Jinxing Tendencies finished this evening, but I'll probably bring him to work on at A&C this afternoon. ^____^v (dang tricksters)

And finally? Clean House + Clean Laundry + Clean Jane = SO MUCH HAPPY. yus. ^_^

I should totally make bread today.

Edit: also also, if you happen to be in Madison and have nothing to do and want to get out? I could totally use company while I'm working on my list. I... don't think I've actually talked to anyone other than my cats since Friday? D: Hermit!Jane is hermitish. Like a crab I am yummy and squishy under my shell.

Also, I might bake if I have someone to bake for. And we all know how good a bribe that is. ~_^ (I'm thinking cinnamon raisin bread and this baked trifle pudding recipe Jen showed me on Friday. It's like, Cake + Pudding + Flan! omg! ^__^)

Also, I think I'm going to take advantage of the weather and bike to the co-op for a couple groceries. (weather don't fail me now! D:)
